The Briarcliff Mansion at Emory University is being redeveloped as a boutique hotel. It’s an ambitious effort to restore another one of Atlanta’s architectural gems that has long since been boarded up and, were it not for Emory University‘s stewardship, left for the wrecking ball. Originally built by Asa Griggs “Buddie” Candler, Jr., the property has seen use as a private zoo, alcohol treatment facility, filming location. It will now serve as a boutique hotel and event center.
Republic Property Company will restore the original building and greenhouse, then add six additional structures and an outdoor pool. The underlying agreement is based on a long-term ground lease between Emory and Republic. Support for the project is coming from all corners, including the Druid Hills Civic Association, the DeKalb County Historic Preservation Commission, and the Georgia Trust.
